Before sophomore Honors College student Jesse Thompson came to Kent State in 2022 from Cincinnati, Ohio, he often watched HGTV with his father鈥 a handy man around the house who was often building things. With that influence, Jesse decided to major in construction management. While 鈥淎dopt a Disability for a Day鈥 wasn鈥檛 featured in this October鈥檚 Disability Awareness Month event lineup, it was offered at the first 鈥淯nderstanding Disability and Physical Difference Month鈥 celebrated on campus in November of 1971. Students, faculty, and staff were 鈥渆ncouraged to adopt a physical disability of blindness or being in a wheelchair鈥 (Challenge Newsletter November 1972).
