In Spring 2019 Jenna Gilbreath, 鈥23, was an incoming communication studies student, unsure and nervous about what her new life at Kent State University would look like. During an incoming student visit day, one person and one conversation reassured her that she was on the right path. That person was鈥May 1970, Student-led Collective Action and the Civil Rights Movement: A KSU Alternative Winter Break Experience
Kent State University's alternative breaks expose students to social justice and cultural issues through direct service, community engagement, reflection and a variety of cultural activities. These programs engage students in service, inform them about current social issues and encourage their ongoing involvement in social change. In December, students visited Jackson, Mississippi for a trip, themed May 1970, Student-led Collective Action and the Civil Rights Movement.
Gordon Stumpo, MA 鈥16
For Gordon Stumpo, MA 鈥16, education is not something to leave behind after graduation. His eagerness to learn new techniques and hone his skills has propelled him forward in his career. With nearly a decade of fashion industry experience, Gordon has worked for designers like Zac Posen, Patrik Ervell and Naeem Khan, experiences that provided opportunities to create custom patterns seen on A-list celebrities including Oprah, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Mariah Carey.
Kent State Prepared Journalism Alumna for Wide-Ranging Career 鈥 Today, She Gives Back
Laura Gordon, '87, had such a fulfilling experience as a Kent State University student, that she now gives back so that others may find their way to the types of relationships and encounters that helped set her on her path. 鈥淚 think it鈥檚 really important to give back when you鈥檝e experienced such valuable support so it鈥檚 always been really important to me to be part of that,鈥 she said.
Kent State鈥檚 Giving Tuesday Campaign Raises $3.6 Million for Scholarships and Programs
This November, members of the Kent State University community joined together to shine their light on philanthropy. During the November campaign, Kent State鈥檚 Giving Tuesday raised $3.6 million, marking the sixth year it has brought in more than $1 million to support scholarships and programs across Kent State鈥檚 eight-campus system.

This Giving Tuesday, shine your light on Kent State students and programs with a gift of $25 or more to the fund of your choice and receive a special Forever Brighter pin to celebrate your impact. Sponsored by the Kent State University Alumni Association, the Alumni Awards are the university鈥檚 highest alumni honors. Recipients are selected based on their exceptional professional and civic contributions and for their outstanding support of the university. The 2022 Alumni Award recipients include six alumni and one student.
Kent State Achieves Unprecedented Fundraising Success During First Year of Forever Brighter Campaign
Kent State University launched the public phase of its $350 million Forever Brighter comprehensive fundraising campaign in October 2021, and during the first year of the public campaign, a record-breaking $77.6 million was raised. This philanthropic feat was made possible with the support of 10,687 donors, 3,753 of whom made a gift to Kent State for the first time.
